Why does the renewal price matter?
Many endings are sold cheaply for the first year and much higher after. We see names at $1.99 for year one that renew at $22 to $44. A .com is about $11 every year, and .org, .dev and .app are similar. Always look at the renewal price before buying.
What does owning a domain really mean?
You are the registrant: your name and email are on the registration. That is what lets you move it, renew it and prove it is yours. If an agency or a friend registers it for you under their details, they legally hold it. Answer the verification email the registry sends after purchase, or the domain can be suspended.
Can I move a domain later?
Yes. Pointing a domain at a different host takes minutes and needs no transfer at all: you only change DNS records, as described in connecting a Namecheap, GoDaddy or Squarespace domain. Moving the registration itself to another company takes about a week, needs a transfer code, and is blocked for the first 60 days after purchase by registry rules.

Common questions
Can I permanently buy a domain?
No. Domains are always rented, normally a year at a time, up to ten years in advance. Turn on auto renew so you never lose it by accident.
Which ending should I choose?
A .com if the name you want is free. Otherwise a well known ending such as .co, .org, .app or your country's ending. Very cheap novelty endings can look less trustworthy and often renew at high prices.
